How to store fresh herbs
For all types of herbs, hard or soft, wrap a bunch lengthways in paper towel, rolling them up to enclose in the paper towel, then place inside a plastic bag. Seal well and keep in the refrigerator in the crisper section. This will keep your herbs fresh for a week.
If you have extra room in your refrigerator, an alternative to above method is stand them in a large jug or jar with a few centimetres of water in the bottom. Cover the top with an upturned plastic bag sealed with a rubber band at the bottom. This method is particularly good for soft herbs.
Should you wash herbs before chopping?
It is always a good idea to wash your herbs before chopping. Even if your herbs are home grown, often dirt, soil and bugs can make their way onto the leaves.
What is the best way to wash herbs?
- Wash your herbs by filling your salad spinner or bowl with cold water, then swirl the herbs gently around in the water to loosen any dirt.
- Drain the water from the bowl leaving the herbs in the basket, then spin the herbs dry.
- Remove the herbs from the spinner, then set them on a layer of paper towels. Pat gently with more paper towels to remove all moisture
- If you don’t have a salad spinner, gently shake off excess water and blot with paper towel to remove any excess moisture
