Top tips on how to test if a mango is ripe and how long they last
- Colour Check: Look for mangoes that have a vibrant, rich colour. Green mangoes may still be ripe if there are other signs of ripeness, but avoid those with a lot of dark brown or black spots.
- Firmness Test: Gently squeeze the mango. A ripe mango will yield slightly to pressure, but it shouldn't feel mushy. If it's rock hard, it needs more time to ripen.
- Sniff Test: Smell the mango near the stem end. Ripe mangoes emit a sweet, fruity aroma. A strong alcoholic or sour smell indicates overripeness or spoilage.
- Skin Texture: A ripe mango may have a slightly wrinkled skin, which is normal. Avoid mangoes with excessively wrinkled skin as this can indicate overripeness.
- Stem Check: If the stem end is oozing sap or liquid, it's past its prime.
- Weight Consideration: A ripe mango often feels heavier than it looks, indicating juiciness.
How long do mangoes last?
- Shelf Life (Unripe): Unripe mangoes last about a week at room temperature. Speed up ripening by placing them in a paper bag on their own or add a banana.
- Shelf Life (Ripe): Once ripe, mangoes can be stored in the fridge for about five days. Overripe mangoes can still be used for smoothies or baking. Consider freezing the cheeks too!
