Defrost mince quickly with no microwave

There are a few ways to defrost mince, but if you need to do it quickly, the water method is usually the best way. However, the packaging must be water-tight, and if there are large air bubbles (as in the case of supermarket packaging) it will take much longer.
If your mince is in the right packaging, defrost it by following these steps:

  1. Place the mince and packaging into a large, deep bowl.
  2. Fill the container with room temperature water from the sink. Do not use warm or hot water - this will defrost the edges of the mince much faster than the centre, leaving it at an unsafe temperature where bacteria can grow.
  3. Replace the water every 30 minutes or so until defrosted. Depending on the quantity of mince it can take 1-2 hours. Once defrosted, use the mince as soon as possible. Save excess water to water plants.

If your mince is not in the right packaging, e.g. it has large air pockets or it's not water tight, you can speed up the defrosting process by repackaging it:

  1. Take the mince out of its original packaging. You may need to let it stand on the bench for 10-15 minutes to release it more easily.
  2. Place mince in a large zip lock bag. Squeeze out as much excess air as possible and seal tightly.
  3. Follow the steps above until defrosted. Once defrosted, use the mince as soon as possible.
