The difference between vegan and vegetarian diets
Both of these diets are becoming more popular and mainstream in recent years. Some people eat vegan or vegetarian diets all year round, while some adopt the diet on particular days, such as meat-free Monday. So what's the difference between them?
What can vegans eat?
Vegans only eat plant-based foods. All animal products are avoided, such as all meats, poultry, seafood, dairy, and eggs. It also encompasses animal by-products such as gelatine and honey. Some vegans will adopt a completely vegan lifestyle where they don't use products such as leather or wool either.
What can vegetarians eat?
A vegetarian diet can vary slightly from person to person. Generally, vegetarians won't eat meat from animals including red meat, poultry and seafood. However, animal products such as eggs, honey and dairy will still be part of their diet. Vegetarians that eat seafood such as fish and shellfish are technically called pescatarians.
