How to do the fold over method for pie makers
One dilemma that pie maker enthusiasts are faced with is what to do with leftover pastry from making pie maker pies.
The fold over method for making pie maker pies is great because it eliminates any leftover pastry, meaning no scraps and no waste! Instead of cutting separate tops and bases, this easy method just uses one sheet of pastry folded over to make a pie shell.
Steps for the pie maker fold over method
- Cut a sheet of slightly thawed pastry into 4 equal squares.
- Place a square of pastry over a hole in the cold pie maker. Gently push down and fill with cool filling.*
- Bring the four corners of pastry to the centre to cover the filling. Pinch to seal. Repeat with remaining pastry and filling.
- Remove pies, placing in a muffin tin to hold their shape. Cover and and refrigerate as you preheat the pie maker.
- Once pie maker is heated, place formed pies in pie maker and cook as per recipe.
*To make step two easier: Take the pastry and make a quarter cut from the top of the square towards the bottom. Repeat for all sides. These cuts will make it easier to fold the pastry into the pie maker.
Note that if you put the seam side down, your pies will come out with a nice smooth top. But if you don't mind what your pies look like, you can bake the pies either way.
