How to freeze pie maker pies

You can easily freeze pie maker pies after they've been cooked. Follow these simple tips to freeze pies and avoid them frosting over or sticking together in the freezer. Then reheat them in the oven or a pie maker following the steps to get crispy pastry and hot filling.

1. Let pies cool completely
Lay out the cooked pies onto a wire rack to cool after cooking. A wire rack lets the steam escape so the pastry stays crisp and is less likely to break.

2. Wrap
Use cling film or baking paper to wrap each pie individually, then place into ziplock bags or freezer-safe containers. Label with date and type of pie.

3. Freeze for up to two months
To reduce the risk of freezer burn and for best results once reheated, eat your frozen pies within two months.

4. Defrost in fridge
When you're ready to eat, place the pies in the refrigerator overnight to completely defrost. Alternatively, take pie out of plastic, wrap in a paper towel and microwave upside down on turntable. Heat on high in 30 second intervals. Repeat until just defrosted.

5. Finish in the oven or pie maker
Finish heating pies in a moderate oven (180°C) for 20 minutes, or place into a preheated pie maker for 5-10 minutes. This will crisp up the pastry and get the filling nice and hot.

To test if your pie is hot enough, push a tip of a knife into the centre of one pie. Leave there for 30 secs. Now touch the tip and you can determine the temperature. If it’s hot against your fingers, it is ready. If just warm, heat for a further 5 minutes.
